Senior Application Security Engineer Amazon EC2

Amazon Development Centre South Africa is looking for senior security engineers to join us and help to solve a challenging set of problems in a space packed full of opportunities. Amazon Web Services provides Amazon's developer customers with access to in-the-cloud infrastructure services based on Amazon's own back-end technology platform, which developers can use to enable virtually any type of business. The Cape Town based Development Center plays a key role in building the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) is the web service that is pioneering cloud computing by providing resizable compute capacity in the cloud. It gives any developer complete control of their computing resources and lets them run on Amazon's proven computing environment. We are continuing to build the team in order to expand on our feature set and manage our rapidly increasing scale.

The tremendous growth of EC2 over the last few years has created huge challenges as well as opportunities in the cloud security space. This role's focus is on identifying and developing solutions to protect EC2 system and our customers from any and all threats.

Key responsibilities include:

• Develop security solutions to protect EC2 network and infrastructure, including auto detecting potential intrusions, enforcing security policies/compliance, creating security components across the massive and distributed EC2 network
• Define and create the processes/tools and auto detection technologies to mitigate abuse activities, such as botnet, DDOS, spamming
• Improve EC2 security service offerings to help our customers to protect their applications against attacks from the cloud
• Participate in security operational support, actively analyzing cases and threat trends
• Evaluate and recommend new and emerging security products and technologies
• Recognize, adopt, utilize and teach best practices in security engineering: secure development, cryptography, network security, security operations, systems security, policy, and incident response
• Partner with teams throughout the Company to develop pragmatic solutions that achieve business requirements while maintaining an acceptable level of risk
• Solve problems at their root, stepping back to understand the broader context
• Maintain an understanding of the Internet threat environment and how it affects the company and keep knowledge and skills current with the rapidly changing threat landscape
• Participate in efforts that create and improve the company's security policies

• Strong customer focus
• 5+ years of industry experience
• Demonstrated ability to achieve stretch goals in a highly innovative and fast paced environment.
• Experience with Ruby, Perl, Java or C/C++.
• 4 year University Degree or Masters in Computer Science or equivalent (PhD a plus)
• Strong analytical skills with excellent problem solving abilities.
• Excellent written communication and verbal agility are strong assets.
